Happy Summer
Get Creative!

Hello Everyone,

I am thinking of you and imagining that you are having a wonderful summer. Summer is precious - it is a very special time. So we must make the most of it! For me, I am blessed to be getting out in my boat and visiting friends and family at their various cottages and cabins as part of my summer ritual. Breathing in the salt air and swimming in the ocean are two things that make me happy. I have been utilizing my water jogging belt and water jogging shoes. You should try water jogging - it is fabulous exercise and does a great job of toning leg muscles. It can be done in the ocean or in a pool. Books are part of summer fare and I list my selections for you. As well, creativity features in a special way this summer. Take a look at my two creative endeavors! Even if your vacation time is long or short, build your memory banks - enjoy your summer!

 Books I Like
Summer Reading!

The Chosen Maiden
Oh to put your feet up and dive into a good book. Feels great - right!? I enjoyed a book of ballet history: The Chosen Maiden by Eva Stachniack. This historical and well-researched novel highlights Bronia Nijinsky, sister of the famous Russian dancer Vaslav Nijinsky. Her mesmerizing talent and stunning discipline will eventually take her to the heights of Russian ballet: the prestigious, old-world Mariinsky Theatre and modern Ballets Russes. But as the First World War rages and revolution sparks in Russia, Bronia must chart her own course in the battle between old and new, traditional and ground-breaking, safe and passionate. The book based on true events, The Chosen Maiden will sweep readers from St. Petersburg and Kiev to London and Paris and plunge them into the riotous world of modern art. Against the fascinating and tragic backdrop of early 20th century Europe, and surrounded by legends like Anna Pavlova, Coco Chanel, Serge Diaghilev and Igor Stravinsky, Bronia Nijinsky fortified by grit and resilience that comes from ardent passion, must fight for her own place in a world that only wishes to see her fall.

The Elephant Whisperer: My Life with the Herd in The African Wild by Lawrence Anthony and Graham Spence.
Do you love elephants? When you were little, did you enjoy the charming Babar books? Between the ages of three and six, I spent my early childhood in Kenya East Africa where elephants and many wild animals could be sighted in the local game reserves? I grew up seeing lions, elephants, hippos, zebras, gazelles, giraffes, and big poisonous snakes! Quite a childhood with many memories! But if you are interested in elephants, here is a must-read elephant book and one which you may have heard about. When South African conservationist Lawrence Anthony was asked to accept a herd of "rogue" wild elephants on his Thula Thula game reserve in Zululand, his common sense told him to refuse. But he was the herd's last chance of survival: they would be killed if he wouldn't take them. In order to save their lives, Anthony took them in. In the years that followed he became a part of their family. And as he battled to create a bond with the elephants, he came to realize that they had a great deal to teach him about life, loyalty, and freedom. The Elephant Whisperer is a heartwarming, exciting, funny, and sometimes sad account of Anthony's experiences with these huge yet sympathetic creatures. Set against the background of life on an African game reserve, with unforgettable characters and exotic wildlife, it is a delightful book that will appeal to animal lovers and adventurous souls everywhere.

You have probably seen this haunting video of numbers of elephants coming to pay their respects to the elephant whisperer - Lawrence Anthony after he died. Elephants know.

 My Summer Creative Projects

On a recent trip to a small West Coast village, I spotted a cool top hot pink. It was on sale but it was the wrong size - way too big. Think about getting creative. The store owner kindly placed a pin in the back of the top to create a seam which I would sew all the way down the middle of the back of the top so that the shoulders would line up correctly. It worked. Here's a photo of me with a pink flamingo at a back yard pool party.  I love my hot pink top!

My second creative project is a hot-water-bottle cover. If you're out on a boat on chilly evenings, to warm your bed and to warm your feet in the morning, a hot water bottle is a must. I mentioned the idea of making a hot water bottle cover to my sewing group. One of the women brought me a recycled wool sweater - again a lovely pink. She had boiled the sweater to "felt" mat, or shrink the fabric. This is a traditional European technique, and if you can find a boiled wool jacket - that is a real find.
I chose to use the sleeves of the sweater for the body of the hot water bottle. The sweater had a collar which I used to encircle the neck of the hot water bottle. The sweater had a buttoned opening - which I used for the bottom of the hot water bottle and it also sported a pocket! I sewed a seam down the front and the back. Then the balance of the stitching was all done by hand using a blanket stitch. Here is the finished result - a real, cozy warm friend! Hot water bottle covers can be made with a fleece remnant or other plush fabric. This makes a great and inexpensive gift for the holiday season.

Yummy Peach Salad!

A wonderful summer fruit - the peach takes front and center in your salad. Create your green salad using any ingredients that you like. Then take a beautiful, juicy peach. Peel the peach and cut it into chunks and sprinkle the peach chunks on the top of your salad. Dress with an oil and vinegar dressing. Garnish with slivered almonds or pecan halves and all of your guests will love this salad. Easy, colorful and a real taste treat! Enjoy!

Don't Forget Candida Yeast!

Summer is a tricky time with sweet desserts and a wealth of seasonal fruits available. Don't forget Candida Yeast Control. Take Candida Yeast Control supplements which are available in a number of brands at your local health food store. Stay on top of Candida Yeast. When that yeast gets out of control from excessive sugar and starch consumption, you can experience uncontrollable cravings, fatigue and foggy thinking. Remember: control that yeast beast!
