Spring 2017 Newsletter
Happy Spring!
Do Something for Yourself

Hello Everyone,

Wherever you are, I hope your spring is going well. Here in the Northwest - we have not really had much of a spring - all the more reason to stay upbeat and optimistic! I love a friend of mine who had a serious heart problem a number of years ago. After he recovered from his surgery, instead of complaining about a rainy day or a cold day - he was just thrilled to enjoy every day. When faced with a life-threatening illness, appreciation for the day, no matter what the weather, is the best attitude to have!  This newsletter focuses on "spring things", last call registrations, books, a yummy recipe and some things that you can do to lift your spirits. Happy spring!

A Book I Like

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
I first heard about The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks in The New York Times Book Review. If you want to find the latest in books, take a look at the weekly NYT Book review. I am always looking for non-fiction. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks was released in 2005 and for me it fit the criteria; true, raw, investigative journalism. Henrietta Lacks remains immortal and the author Rebecca Skloot has made sure of that. Against all odds, Skloot was persistent in her discovery of what happened to Henrietta and the famous HeLa cells that were harvested from her cancerous cervix in 1951. Until recently no one knew about these cells or their origin. But thanks to the work of author Rebecca Skloot and her connection with Deborah Lacks Henrietta's daughter, the truth has been revealed. Now the book and the contribution of Henrietta Lacks cells to medical science, has come alive in an HBO movie of the same title starring Oprah Winfrey - a must see!

  3. 2-4 garlic cloves, minced
  4. 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced

Note from my daughter - this was delish!
Basically sauté veggies first, then add stock, pumpkin or squash and coconut milk and then purée.

Lift Your Spirits!

Here are some ideas to lift your spirits and help your day go better!
  • Put on some music and dance!
  • Treat yourself - buy some flowers.
  • Take a walk by the ocean or up a hill. At the top of the hill, take 10 deep breaths and think of 10 things you can be thankful for.
  • Call a friend that you have not connected with for some time and have a good chat.
  • Call a friend and go to a movie. I enjoyed the movie Gifted.
  • Take the whole day out - stay in your bath robe and read a good book.
  • Looking for a creative project? Paint your couch - yes you can. A few years ago, I saw a program by Debbie Travis on The Painted House. I was intrigued so I tried it. Mix 2 parts of regular indoor acrylic paint with 1 part fabric medium. Paint this on to the upholstered part of the couch only. You will need three coats. You will have to recover the cushions - they cannot be painted. Trust me, I did this and it works! I now have a lovely white couch - when it used to be a Santa Fe print! Everyone loves my couch!
