Caroline Recommends Movies!

The Lady in the Van

See Maggie Smith at her finest as she plays a homeless woman who lives in a van. This movie is based on the poignant true story of a woman parks her van in the garden of English playwright Alan Bennett. Planning to park there for three weeks, Miss Sheppard, played by Maggie Smith, ends up living in his garden for 15 years and in so doing, forms an endearing relationship with Mr. Bennett. Trailer.

Race: The Jesse Owens Story

If you are interested in this part of our history, you will appreciate the story of young Jesse Owens (played by Stephan James) who becomes a track and field sensation while attending the Ohio State University in the early 1930s. With guidance from coach Larry Snyder (played by Jason Sudeikis), Owens gains national recognition for breaking numerous records. After heated debates, the United States decides not to boycott the 1936 Olympics in Nazi Germany. Overcoming racism at home and abroad, Owens seizes the opportunity to show Berlin and the world that he's the fastest man alive. Very inspirational! Trailer.

A Book I Like

This book is so useful that I want to mention it again. Once in a while you meet someone who has written a book that encapsulates all of the elements of living life positively and engaging the "manifesting mind."

This book is A Short Cut to Success: 3 Ancient Secrets to Getting Ahead and Creating an Amazing Life by Bob Huttinga PA. As many of you know, Bob has featured significantly in my life as the Michigan-based physician assistant who introduced me to The Virtual Gastric Band program. This incredibly effective hypnosis technique has changed my life as a medical intuitive and health educator. Thank you Bob! In his great book, Bob uses three ancient secrets to manifesting all you've ever wanted in your life, in an easy step by step process. If there is one book you plan to read this winter - this is it!

My Favorite Salad Recipe

Need crunch in your salads? Me too! Take one head of romaine lettuce, and tear into small pieces.

Add one sliced Belgian endive which offers a crunchy bitter taste to the salad.

And 1 cup Arugula - that bitter dark green leafy. Add one avocado - cut into chunks. Lightly toss. Sprinkle with pecan or walnut pieces and drizzle with a simple vinaigrette dressing.

Winter Soup Recipe: Beans and Bison Hot Pot

If you are looking for something yummy and satisfying, try this soup recipe.
  • 1 cup white navy beans - rinse, cover and soak overnight in cold water
  • 4 cups organic bison or beef cut into small cubes
  • 4 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 medium leeks -thoroughly washed and sliced thin
  • 1 large garlic clove, cut fine
  • 4 stalks celery chopped
  • 2 small carrots chopped
  • 1 -2 cartons organic beef or vegetable broth
  • 3/4 cup red wine - when wine is heated alcohol evaporates
  • 2 medium size fresh tomatoes - cut in small chunks
  • 1 /4 teaspoon each: dried thyme, marjoram, basil and rosemary - or 1 tbsp of a lovely French herb combination called "Herbes de Provence."
  • Splash of apple cider vinegar
Cover and soak the beans in cold water overnight. Drain and rinse well. Sauté or brown beef or bison pieces in olive oil. Add leeks, garlic and vegetables and sauté for 5 minutes. Add broth, wine, tomatoes, herbs and beans. Simmer for 1 hour over low/medium heat until beans and beef are tender. Add the splash of vinegar. Check for seasoning. You may need to add salt, and fresh ground pepper if desired. Add a little more water if mixture is too thick.

Herbes de Provence is available in a little fabric sack at any fine cookware shop or in bulk at your health food grocery store.

Simple Ways to Lift Your Spirits

Its spring in the Pacific Northwest and tulips are on sale for two bunches for $5. What a treat! Surround yourself with beauty. Fresh flowers of any kind bring nature indoors and emanate healing energy.  Watching the news can be draining and disturbing.

Change the music to classical, jazz, classic rock or dance music. Make your own good news by being creative and following your heart. Silence is magical - turn off the TV all together - unless you're a Downton Abbey fan!

Feeling the effects of lack of light in your neighborhood? You could be suffering from SAD - or Seasonal Affected Disorder which is easy to correct. Take a pocket flashlight and place it on your night stand. When you get into bed, turn on the flashlight and hold it on your third eye point (middle of your forehead) and hold it there for 3 minutes. Repeat a positive affirmation while you are doing that. I like: Every Day, in Every Way, I'm getting Healthier and More Motivated! Repeat this procedure with the affirmation and the flashlight in the morning when you wake up as well. Within a few weeks you'll be feeling much better and more energetic.

Here's another idea...

Lift someone's spirits and send a card. I'm always looking for great cards. These are very fun, creative and very special. Celebrate the goddess in you and every woman you know. This wonderful card line is created by master artist and children's book author and illustrator Anne Baird. Baird's whimsical cards feature "real size" women and depict healthy body images. Terrific all occasion cards too! Let people know that you are thinking of them and send a card

Live Stream Inspirational Salon

I just completed my first online live stream training for The Virtual Gastric Band procedure. The attendance was excellent and everyone enjoyed the class. Imagine taking a workshop without even leaving your home! I am considering doing a once a month online live-streaming video class featuring spiritual teachings or a Dharma Talk format.

This will be open to people who have a gmail email address. Think about creating a gmail email address and then you'll be ready when I announce my first Spiritual Salon!

Online Medical Intuitive Training

This fall I will be offering an online Medical Intuitive Training using the same online live stream format. I am quite excited. I love teaching this class. I offered my last MIT in-person training last fall in Bellingham WA and since that time, I have had numerous requests for an online training. We are planning a fall 2016 date for this online training.

Details will be posted on my website soon!
