Welcome to a whole new year. How are you doing with your New Year's resolutions? I am living up to mine - increasing my exercise, drinking more water and having more fun!

You Never Know Who You Will Meet

 

Last week at Whole Foods I was filling a jar with dried dill. One of my favorite lunches when I am at home, is canned, wild Alaska salmon, mixed with mayo and anointed with a liberal sprinkling of dried dill! There at the herb station, I noticed an elderly woman come up beside me. She moved slowly, navigating her walker into position and reaching up to find the herb she wanted. She was struggling to reach the right jar. I wondered how she had managed to make her way through the shoppers and their carts and how she even got to the store in the first place! I asked her if I could help. I looked into her eyes, knowing that the Universe had put her in front of me and this was no chance meeting. I'm looking for Herbes de Provence she said. Herbes de Provence is a mixture of dried herbs - a staple in southern France and contains savory, marjoram, rosemary, thyme, oregano and lavender . I found the herb mixture for her and poured the required amount into the bag. She told me that Hebes  de Provence is the magic ingredient for roasted vegetables. Cut up your favorite vegetables for roasting, coat each piece with butter. Sprinkle with Herbes de Provence and bake in the oven for one hour at 350 degrees.

"What if I didn't worry?"

Dr. Katka Novakova, from Dr. Ramsey's Center for Natural Healing in Paradise Valley, Arizona sat with this question and the following is what she has to offer us:

Sitting with the profound nature of the question, I took a deep breath and looked inside myself for the answer.  Instantly my day, my week - everything completely transformed as I removed worry from everything that has to be done in my life. . .

You've undoubtedly heard that the cause of most illness is stress (according to Bruce Lipton, a cellular biologist, about 95% of all illnesses are caused by stress), and during the holiday season you probably saw information for any number of supportive healing techniques to decrease stress -- from deep breathing to meditation, yoga to tapping, and many more.  While these can all be very effective, and I highly recommend them, have you ever asked yourself, what is the main cause of stress in your life?

So if we consider all these things together -- 95% of all illness is caused by stress, most (if not all) stress is caused by worrying, but 95% of what we worry about never really happens -- we get a great incentive to not only focus on decreasing stress, but primarily to let go of worrying!

Here are a few things that may help us let go of worrying:

1.  Write each worry down on a little piece of paper. This way the worry will be acknowledged and often as one is writing it down the worry begins to dissipate. (You can even use a little "worry box" to put your worries in - children especially love those.)

2.  Put little notes around your home reminding you of the question -- "What if I didn't worry?" (Just reading a note on your mirror or refrigerator as you are thinking about what has to be done  can help put things in perspective.)

3.  When confronted with worry, take a deep breath and realize that each worry is just a "point of view" often fueled by old beliefs and experiences and unfounded fears.  Often just noticing our point of view is enough for our mind to start breaking the process of worrying and seeing the futility in it.

 

Make 2014 your best year yet. Take moments to stop and breathe into your life!

A Book I Like


People are interested in what I am reading. I like to read true stories, biographies and non-fiction. I gave up reading fiction years ago - I can't really say why. I am interested in how people live their lives. During the holidays, I read an inspirational book, a true story, The Tartan Pimpernel by Rev. Dr. Donald Caskie who was a minister in the Church of Scotland in Paris. He was best known for his exploits in France during World War II, during which he helped an estimated 2,000 Allied sailors, soldiers and airmen to escape from occupied France mainly through Spain. Caskie had the opportunity to leave France and return to the safety of Scotland but he felt "called" to support the allied soldiers. His efforts are beyond heroic as told in this inspirational book.
